Acupuncture Near Bishop Auckland
Acupuncture involves the insertion of fine needles for pain therapy and acts mainly by stimulating the nervous system. Chemicals that help reduce pain and inflammation and influence mood are also released during treatment. Acupuncture also helps to balance the body’s internal environment and this increases the body’s healing potential.
We offer traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Acupuncture at Durham Family Chiropractic, which is a complete system of diagnosis and treatment. Some of our practitioners also offer Dry Needling and Western Medical Acupuncture as an adjunct to manual therapy.

Acupuncture FAQs
What is Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Acupuncture?
TCM acupuncture is one of the longest-established forms of healthcare in the world. Practitioners use subtle diagnostic techniques that have been refined over thousands of years. TCM acupuncture is holistic in its approach and seeks to treat the whole person. As well as ascertain the root cause of the problems rather than the symptomatic approach as with Western allopathic medicine.
There are several forms of TCM acupuncture that exist; the form we offer at Durham Family Chiropractic is five-element acupuncture. If you would like more information on this form of TCM acupuncture then please click here. You will be redirected to the British Acupuncture Council’s website.
What can TCM Acupuncture treat?
There are many reasons why people choose to receive TCM acupuncture. According to the British Acupuncture Council, musculoskeletal pain is the most common problem that people present with. However, there is good evidence to support the use of TCM acupuncture for a much wider range of conditions. Such as chronic pain, osteoarthritis, headache, migraine, respiratory and digestive problems, fertility, anxiety, depression and sleep disorders, to name a few. For more information on the conditions that may respond well to TCM acupuncture as well as the research, please click here to be redirected to the British Acupuncture Council’s research digest.
The British Acupuncture Council also has a ‘Research Fact Sheet’, which is an A-Z list of common conditions. All conditions that may benefit from TCM acupuncture. The summaries of all the research carried out can be found on the ‘Fact Sheet’ and can be accessed here.
We are also able to offer a technique called Battlefield Acupuncture. Which uses specific points in the ear to quickly reduce chronic pain. Because there are many chronic debilitating conditions that may not be suited to nor respond well to chiropractic or other manual therapy treatments. How long does it take acupuncture to start working?
You should notice changes or improvements after two to three sessions. Some people may respond sooner and some may respond slower.
How does TCM Acupuncture differ from Medical Acupuncture or Dry Needling
Both involve the insertion of fine needles into specific points around the body, however, Medical Acupuncture, also known as Western Medical Acupuncture or Dry Needling is different. It is geared towards pain relief and restoration of joint and or muscle function. Rather than being a complete system of diagnosis and treatment. Western Medical Acupuncture and Dry Needling are adjunct to manual therapy and are used to complement manual treatment effects.
