Durham Family Chiropractic are an award-winning multidisciplinary family practice serving County Durham and the surrounding areas since 1997.
Chiropractic is a profession that was founded in 1895 and translates from Greek to mean ‘to do, or to practice by hand’. Today, chiropractic is the third biggest healthcare profession next to medicine and dentistry.
Chiropractic is concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, and the effects of these disorders on the function of the nervous system and general health. There is an emphasis on manual treatments including spinal adjustment and other joint and soft-tissue manipulation.
Chiropractors specifically offer a hands-on approach, their work is not just limited to the spine. Chiropractors also work with all of the joints and soft tissues of the body. Improving the function of your spine and nervous system can offer help for a wide range of conditions that can negatively be affecting your health.

How can Chiropractic Help Me?
Chiropractors identify areas of dysfunction in the spine and nervous system and treat the underlying cause of the individual’s symptoms. They can help restore normal mechanical function, realign your body and relieve symptoms by using their hands to apply specific adjustments to your spine, pelvis and joints. Chiropractic is primarily concerned with nervous system function since our nervous system interprets and governs what we experience. A neural system without structural and functional obstruction will improve your quality of life.

Why should we choose Durham Family Chiropractic?
We are regulated by the General Chiropractic Council. This means that our training and ongoing professional standards and frameworks are continuously monitored. Ensuring that you receive the highest standard of treatment.
We are also honoured to have received prestigious awards from the Royal College of Chiropractors, including the CMQM and the PPQM. You can read more about these here.
What typically happens during a chiropractic adjustment?
Your chiropractor will apply an adjustment to one or several joints in the spine, pelvis or extremities. This is usually done while you lay face down, face up, on your side or while standing against the wall.
Why can I sometimes hear a popping sound when my chiropractor adjusts me?
The popping sound, otherwise known as cavitation, is caused when joint surfaces are separated during an adjustment. This causes gasses to escape. The occurrence of cavitation is not indicative of the adjustment having worked and in itself has no therapeutic benefit.
How often will I have to see my chiropractor?
The number and frequency of appointments will vary greatly depending on the nature of your complaint. Lifestyle and other health-related factors play a huge part in the length of time needed to assist recovery. However, the average number of visits is around 6-12 over a 4-6 week period. Your chiropractor may then recommend maintenance adjustments several times per year depending on your lifestyle.
Can I go to a chiropractor just once?
If you want lasting change, then more than one treatment is required. It takes a long time for your body to become dysfunctional enough to become painful, which is mainly caused by environmental/lifestyle factors, repetitive micro trauma or a significant single trauma. It, therefore, takes time to correct and improve the underlying mechanical problems that are leading to pain and dysfunction. Every body is different and can vary in the length of time it takes to correct the underlying problems.
Can Dowager's hump be corrected?
Dowager’s hump is a name used to describe hyperkyphosis. Hyperkyphosis is quite common and involves the upper spine becoming more curved forward than it ordinarily should be. Hyperkyphosis is often associated with older people. However, it is now becoming more common in the younger generation due to the increased use of technology such as laptops and mobile phones. Overuse or incorrect use of these devices due to looking down at them for long periods can result in hyperkyposis as well as a forward head and shoulder carriage. This condition can then lead to various symptoms and dysfunction. Hyperkyphosis can be improved with Chiropractic in several ways; however, the most efficient way to address this is with Advanced BioStructural Correction.
