Manual Lymphatic Drainage near Brandon

Your body has a system called the lymphatic system that helps keep you healthy and safe from harmful things. It works by keeping the fluid in your body balanced and protects you against infections. Lymph fluid can leak from capillaries into the tissues and if your lymphatic system doesn’t work very well or is blocked, it can result in extra fluid within your tissues.

Part of this system are the lymph nodes, which act like filters to help remove harmful waste from your body. They are found in different parts of your body like your neck, armpits, abdomen, and groin area.

Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is different from regular massage and it can help with a condition called lymphoedema, which causes swelling in different parts of the body. This can be especially problematic following certain types of surgery. MLD was first developed and used by Dr Emil Vodder and his wife Estrid in Paris in 1936.

The lymphatic drainage techniques stimulate the lymph vessels under your skin to help reroute stagnant lymphatic fluid. This can be especially helpful if you have swelling in your face, neck, arms, legs, chest, or genital region.

PLEASE NOTE

MLD is a high demand service. If you are planning a surgical procedure and you would like MLD as part of your post operative care, then it is advisable to book your MLD appointments prior to surgery, as advised by your Doctor. This will ensure that we are able to accommodate your needs.

Is Manual Lymphatic Drainage for Me?

If you are considering whether MLD near Brandon and if it is suitable for you, it’s essential to understand both its benefits and considerations.

Firstly, MLD is often sought after by individuals looking to reduce swelling and improve circulation, particularly those recovering from surgery or suffering from conditions such as lymphoedema. By stimulating the lymphatic system, MLD can reduce swelling and promote the removal of waste and toxins from the body tissues. It’s also known for its deeply relaxing effects, which can be beneficial for stress relief.

However, MLD isn’t for everyone. It’s crucial to consult a healthcare professional if you have any underlying health conditions such as heart or kidney problems, acute infections, or certain types of cancer. MLD may not be recommended or it may require adaptation for these conditions.

If you’re generally healthy, and seeking relief from swelling, arthritic pain, looking to aid your immune system, or wanting a gentle, therapeutic massage to alleviate stress, then MLD might be an excellent option for you. Always ensure you go to a certified therapist trained in MLD, like those at Durham Family Chiropractic.

Our Vodder-trained MLD therapist Zivile can provide a tailored treatment plan based on your specific needs and health status. Remember, the key to benefiting from any therapeutic treatment is open communication with your therapist and a clear understanding of your health and wellness goals.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage FAQs

How do I know if I need lymphatic drainage?

MLD is primarily used to treat painful swelling or fluid buildup in various areas of the body which may present as heaviness or tightness and/or restricted movement of the affected area. This swelling is called lymphedema and can occur alongside certain medical conditions or following certain types of medical treatment or surgery.

If you have fluid buildup or swelling as a result of a medical condition or treatment, then MLD may be able to help resolve this.

Can massage help lymphedema?

Manual Lymphatic Drainage works similarly to regular massage except it’s done in a very specific way to encourage fluid out of the tissue and into the lymphatic system. Regular massage is too hard and not specific enough to promote lymphatic drainage.

How is MLD Conducted?

MLD is typically treated when lying down, but if you have lymphoedema in your head and neck, you must sit up. You feel a gentle pressure when you undergo MLD; the skin movements are very light so that the little lymph vessels are not flattened. Flattened lymph vessels would obstruct lymph fluid drainage. The movements are slow and rhythmic, allowing the lymph vessels to open.

MLD can be taken daily or three times per week for around three weeks. The number of treatments you receive is determined by the nature of your complaint and the amount of swelling present.

Lymphatic drainage occurs in two stages:

Stage 1 – Clearing: This causes lymphatic fluid to be released from your tissues.
Stage 2 – Reabsorption: the movement of lymphatic fluid to lymph nodes.

The benefits of MLD?

Some of the claimed benefits may include:

• Removes toxins and boosts the immune system.
• Assist in all pre- and post-cosmetic surgery healing by minimising pain, bruising, and swelling.
• Treat various chronic diseases, including sinusitis, chest infections, and catarrh.
• Provide relief from IBS and constipation.
• Relieve arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis pain.
• Relieve persistent tiredness symptoms.
• Migraine relief.
• Aid in the treatment of skin problems such as acne.
• Assist in the reduction of all types of postoperative edema.
• Reduction in stress, worry, and tension levels.
• Correct hormonal imbalances (puberty, pre- & post-pregnancy, menopause).
• Reduce fluid congestion, such as puffy eyes, a swollen face, swollen legs and ankles, menstrual bloating, and pregnant fluid retention.

What happens to your body after lymphatic drainage massage?

Following MLD you may have an increase in thirst and in some instances you may feel some fatigue, nausea or a headache. You may also notice an increase in energy and a reduction in swelling several days following MLD.

How do I know if my lymphatic system is clogged?

When people talk about a “clogged” lymphatic system, what they usually mean is that the lymph fluid isn’t draining as well as it should. Medically, this is often called lymphoedema, a long-term swelling caused by a problem in the lymph vessels and glands that normally help remove excess fluid and support your immune system.

Typical signs that your lymphatic drainage may not be working properly include:

  • Persistent swelling in part or all of a limb, or another area such as the face, trunk or genitals – clothes, shoes, jewellery or watches may feel tighter on one side than the other.
  • A heavy, tight or full feeling in the area, or a sense that the limb “fills up” as the day goes on and feels a little better overnight.
  • Stiffness or reduced movement because the tissues feel puffy or firm.
  • Skin changes over time – the skin can feel thicker or less flexible, and you may be more prone to small infections, such as cellulitis in that area.

These symptoms don’t prove on their own that your lymphatic system is the cause; other medical issues (for example, problems with veins, heart or kidneys) can also lead to swelling, so it’s important to have new or unexplained swelling checked by your GP.

If your GP has confirmed that you have lymphoedema or fluid build-up, gentle manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) may be recommended as part of your ongoing care to help support lymph flow and ease discomfort.
