Pregnancy Chiropractic FAQs
What chiropractic treatment method do you use during pregnancy??
Webster Technique is a specialised chiropractic treatment method for use during pregnancy that requires certification through the International Chiropractic Paediatric Association (ICPA).
Can a chiropractor and their treatments help in pregnancy?
Back and pelvic pain during pregnancy is very common, with approximately 50-80% of woman experiencing symptoms during their pregnancy. Chiropractic care during pregnancy involves the use of gentle spinal manipulation and joint mobilisation techniques as well as targeted soft tissue work. Your chiropractor will use a special pregnancy cushion (or modify the treatment couch) for comfort during your appointment. They may also treat you while lying on your side or standing upright depending on your symptoms.
Chiropractic during pregnancy is considered safe and effective and many woman have reported positive outcomes from weekly chiropractic care for low back and pelvic pain following approximately 6 weeks of care.

What is the Webster Technique?
Webster Technique is a chiropractic sacral analysis and gentle diversified adjustment. The goal of the adjustment is to reduce the effects of sacral subluxation/Sacroiliac joint dysfunction. This is coupled with the release of very specific pelvic ligaments and in doing so, neuro-biomechanical function in the pelvis is facilitated.
What is Sacral subluxation?
Sacral subluxation may contribute to pain and difficult labour for the mother. Dystocia is caused by inadequate uterine function, pelvic contraction, and baby mal-presentation. Correction of sacral subluxation may have a positive effect on all of these causes of dystocia.
The Webster Technique has become a familiar term in the pregnancy and birth conversation. Families are seeking out chiropractors who are proficient in this technique as a way to support a more comfortable, safer, and easier birth.
We have one chiropractor that is Webster certified and they are happy to discuss whether this technique is right for you.

What happens during my appointment while pregnant?
You will be asked to lay face down or face up on the treatment couch so that the specific adjustments can be applied. A special pregnancy cushion is used to enable you to lay face down for the adjustment.
How often will I have to see my chiropractor while pregnant?
This depends on the extent of the complaint, however, on average 6-8 appointments. This is usually enough to resolve most pregnancy-related complaints. Your chiropractor may recommend you return for a postpartum check-up once your baby is born.
