Acupuncture involves the insertion of fine needles for pain therapy. It acts mainly by stimulating the nervous system to release chemicals that help reduce pain and inflammation and influence mood. Acupuncture helps to balance the body’s internal environment and this increases the body’s healing potential.
We offer traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Acupuncture, which is a complete system of diagnosis and treatment, and some of our practitioners offer Dry Needling and Western Medical Acupuncture as an adjunct to manual therapy.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Acupuncture
TCM acupuncture is one of the longest established forms of healthcare in the world and practitioners use subtle diagnostic techniques that have been refined over thousands of years. TCM acupuncture is holistic in its approach and seeks to treat the whole person and ascertain the root cause of the problems rather than the symptomatic approach as with Western allopathic medicine.
There are several forms of TCM acupuncture that exist; the form we offer at Durham Family Chiropractic is five-elements acupuncture. If you would like more information on this form of TCM acupuncture then please click here to be redirected to the British Acupuncture Council’s website.
What can TCM Acupuncture treat?
There are many reasons why people choose to receive TCM acupuncture and according to the British Acupuncture Council, musculoskeletal pain is the most common problem that people present with. However, there is good evidence to support the use of TCM acupuncture for a much wider range of conditions, such as chronic pain, osteoarthritis, headache, migraine, respiratory and digestive problems, fertility, anxiety, depression and sleep disorders, to name a few. For more information on the conditions that may respond well to TCM acupuncture as well as the research, please click here to be redirected to the British Acupuncture Council’s research digest.
The British Acupuncture Council also has a ‘Research Fact Sheet’, which is an A-Z list of common conditions that may benefit from TCM acupuncture and summaries of the research carried out to determine this. The ‘Fact Sheet’ can be accessed here.
We are also able to offer a technique called Battlefield Acupuncture, which uses specific points in the ear to quickly reduce chronic pain, because there are many chronic debilitating conditions that may not be suited to nor respond well to chiropractic or other manual therapy treatment.
