Counselling FAQs
What is the best therapy for anxiety?
The most effective therapy for anxiety often depends on the person and the severity and type of anxiety.
The best approach varies from person to person and so working with a counsellor can help you find the best approach to meet your needs.
The most commonly recommended evidence-based approaches for anxiety include:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
CBT helps you recognise and change unhelpful patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving. CBT provides long-term tools and strategies to retrain the brain’s response to triggers.
Psychodynamic Therapy
Sometimes, people aren’t sure what’s causing their anxiety. Psychodynamic therapy helps explore deeper, often unconscious thoughts and emotional patterns to uncover the underlying reasons behind those anxious feelings.
Mindfulness-Based Therapy
Mindfulness-Based Therapy consists of relaxation techniques such as meditation, breathing, and awareness practices to become aware of anxious thoughts reduce the automatic response to them.
Exposure Therapy
Exposure Therapy works by utilising a gradual, controlled exposure to feared situations or thoughts which over time helps reduce fear and avoidance.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
ACT helps to develop healthier responses to distress without being overwhelmed by emotions.
